“so, tell me… what are you really thinking?” that’s the question that immdiately springs to mind when viewing the teasingly tongue-in-cheek paintings of luca bjørnsten. squadrons of fedex and dhl planes, landscapes of ikea banners, shell petrol stations and subway takeaway joints, warhol-esque heaps of detergent products and stacked supermarket shelves are juxtaposed with cuddly lambs, cute ponies, white picket fences and a polkadot universe of flowers. all are depicted in the alluring, saturated pastel colours of 1950s us diners or parisian macarons - as thick as butter frosting on a birthday cake and in bold, uninterrupted, self-coloured sections. globalisation and consumer society meet teletubbies. but there is something disconcerting about bjørnsten’s candy crush universe. it seems as fragile as our own self-satisfied, hedonistic insouciance in the face of a rapidly changing world and ever-increasing problems where the clutter of corporate giants has merged ineluctably with the natural world. at any moment it seems like the neapolitan ice cream will melt, revealing something horrific beneath.
