anne-sofie overgaard is exhibiting her work “time machine” in kunstmuseum brandts

the work “time machine” consists of a 4.5m x 1.6m weaving, woven on a large shaft loom and then mounted on a metal structure. the piece is inspired by the mechanical and industrial nature often associated with the loom, as well as the practice behind its tactile outcome. weaving is essentially the interlacing of two thread systems: the warp and the weft. The loom's task is to keep one of the thread systems, the warp, stretched and separate its threads to create a shed. the other thread system, the weft, is inserted into the shed, and in this way, the two thread systems are interwoven into a whole—a piece of weaving. despite this apparent simplicity, the interlacing allows for endless combinations and variations.

at the same time, the loom is also an ancient mythological tool. for instance, it is said that the norse goddesses of fate, the norns, make use of weaving. the three norns, associated with the past, present, and future, sit at the center of the cosmos by the root of yggdrasil and the sacred well, urd's well. here, they spin the threads of human life and determine their life's course and length. from these life threads, they weave a giant tapestry in a pattern that appears random to the naked eye.
