“the exhibition springs from my heritage – a upbringing through a world where art is not just an expression but a lifestyle. it began in my childhood in copenhagen, where artists like christian lemmerz, erik a. frandsen, lise malinovski, gun gordillo, freddy fræk, and many others were part of everyday life. at the top of holbergsgade and peder skramsgade, the studios were filled with empty paint cans, and life was a constant exchange between art and daily life.
“so, you’ve joined the dark side” represents, with an autobiographical starting point, a journey that feels both familiar and new – a journey where I actively participate in the art world as a gallerist. the title refers to a teasing remark from christian lemmerz when i started albert contemporary and alludes to the old, stereotypical position of the gallerist in relation to artists, as well as my own journey in the art world, from being the son of an artist to becoming a gallerist, and the culture within that I wish to change.
the exhibition thus presents both artists I have known for as long as i can remember, those who have shaped my path in the art world, and new artists who represent my vision as a gallerist to collaborate with young artists and experience the world together through art.” - jonathan kvium.
